Unconventional FSBO tactics

I worked on these fabric rolled flowers on Sunday and was really excited about them!

I’ve never worked with fabric before and I was a little nervous about it. I learned a lot and was ready to try some new techniques and share them with you today.

But – things got a little crazy yesterday while Mr. Scout and I worked on getting our house on the market – by selling it ourselves.

I debated about sharing this with you, but the results have been so amazing – and with the economy and housing market falling so rapidly, I thought I’d go ahead and show you what we’ve done.

We purchased signs and I got to use my Silhouette cutter to make the vinyl address and telephone numbers for the signs.

I made flyers.

We listed the house on Craigslist and Zillow.

And during an e-mail conversation I had with Cheri at It’s so Very Cheri, she suggested we make a website for our house. {Thank you, Cheri! You rock!}

We had thought of this before, but having someone else confirm that it might be a good idea, prompted us into action. So, we created a free Blogger account and made a website for our house. We listed the website address on our flyers, on Craigslist and we’re doing FaceBook status updates to our friends about it.

Are you a little curious? Wanna see it?

Go to Hernando House for Sale and take a peek. Go on. I’ll wait.

Now you can see every room in our house.

And the results? AMAZING! We’re getting about 3 hits an hour!!

Now, Mr. Scout and I know that most of the lookers are just curious. But who knows what can happen? Maybe one of those curious lookers knows someone who is moving to our area. Maybe one of those curious lookers can help us find a buyer.

It’s kind of exciting to watch the traffic and know that at any moment, the right person could take a look at our Hernando House for Sale site and fall in love.

It’s all a little unconventional, but in this day and age of uncertain economic times and crazy real estate markets we pray that this works.

So, do any of you need a house in Hernando, MS?

Thanks, Christine. We need it. :)

  • We will very, very soon be in the same boat and I would LOVE to sell it ourselves to save much needed money, but with such a saturated market I’m fearful of going this route. If it works for you, I’ll be all the more tempted!

  • Just visited your website and I’m impressed! You’ve done a fantastic job at marketing yourself and this gives me a good template to copy in case we decide to go this route. Praying for a quick sale for you!!!!

Thanks, Beth. So far we’re seeing a lot of traffic to the site. We’re pushing it out via Craigslist, our flyers and Facebook. It only took a few hours to upload all the pictures. So far, it’s been worth it. I’ll keep everyone posted via my blog.

We’re FSBO’ing for the same reason. We just had no wiggle room using a realtor. We’ve only been in this house for 4 years, so we’ve got very little equity built up in this market.

Congratulations to your husband!!! How soon will you guys have to move?

Great pics of your house. We had ours listed about a year ago for 2 6 months periods (we took the holidays and a few months after off). We had a TON of showings, but no buyer. I’m anxious to see how your experince goes. We would love to do a FSBO..but it just makes me leary having people come in our home with us that we don’t know. I think having a realtor, its kinda them at risk..lol. Good luck..I hope it sells fast!

Thanks, Kim. It’s scary to think about selling in this real estate environment right now. But, hubby got a new job and got transferred, so we don’t have a choice.

I’ll definitely keep everyone posted via my blog about this experiment. Who knows what’ll happen.

We’re going to try and be very careful about who we let in. I thought about asking for a bank letter to show intent from potential viewers, but I’m not sure what we’re going to do yet. Definitely things to think about.

  • hey what a neat way to list your house, i don’t think I would have even considered a website, but that’s a great idea! I’ll have to remember that when we get ready to sell! Good luck, hope it goes fast!

Thanks, Heidi. We hope so, too!

I’ll be keeping you posted via the blog – and guess what, I finally got GFC to move with me. FINALLY! *sigh* So now you’ll get updates. You should. . . Please let me know if you don’t.

  • This is great! Your fabric flowers are really cute – and I think it’s great how you’re selling your house. Really great ideas!
